60：想像の象　　　　--Imaginary elephants-

日光東照宮を訪れた方は、三猿のある神厩舎から参道の反対側に位置する「上神庫」の屋根下に「想像の象」の彫刻があしらわれているのをご存知かと思います。
Those who have visited Nikko Toshogu Shrine may know that there is a sculpture of  "imaginary elephants" under the roof of the "Kami Shinko" (sacred storehouse), located opposite the sacred stables where the "Three Wise Monkeys" are carved.

「想像の象」は、日光東照宮の創建当時、日本には象がいなかったために書物や伝聞などを元にして、狩野探幽がその下絵を描いたとされます。
（ちなみに、江戸の人々が象を見たのは1729年（享保14年）で、吉宗公の時代だそうです。）

さて、この想像の象、実は当ホテルにもいるんです。
こんなユーモラスな、なんとも言えない表情をしておりますが…さて、どこに居りますでしょうか。

At the time Nikko Toshogu Shrine was built, there were no elephants in Japan, so Kano Tan'yū is said to have drawn the sketch for "Imaginary Elephant" based on books and hearsay.
(Incidentally, the people of Edo first saw an elephant in 1729 (the 14th year of the Kyoho era), during the reign of Lord Yoshimune.)

Now, this imaginary elephant actually exists in our hotel.
He has such a humorous and indescribable expression...Now, where is he?
